In March we managed to finish the winter series at Scarborough on yacht Kassy, the last race saw us come in second and therefore completing the series in overall third place. We were really pleased as a team and very much looking forward to the Sunday series. I had my first mast climb on Kassy to do some maintenance (photo evidence below).
The Clipper Race safely arrived in Qingdao. Guy on Nasdaq came in 7th and my team GREAT Britain came in 8th. Nasdaq also won the Stormhoek Social Spirit Award. Guy appreciated his Air bnb I had booked to have a break from the boat and being winter it was warmer and drier! We spoke on the phone from Qingdao each day and now we are back communicating via satellite communications on a daily basis. There was a reshuffle of first mates and Guy is now on Unicef. Next stop Seattle, and at the moment we are not sure who will arrive first – Guy or me?
The Clipper Race put on some extra training over Easter, a refresher course for those joining leg 7 & 8. A mix of people from Great Britain, Liverpool, Visit Seattle, Unicef and Qingdao had a great few days on the Solent. Skipper Mark and mate Dan led a great training session, covering all the areas we wanted to improve our skills as well as all the necessary safety drills. My main areas were extra helming, mooring, setting up spinnaker sheets and weather reports. We all got so much out of this extra training, we also all got on really well, it was great fun and went away feeling more confident and very ready for our race.
